Please Check Your Facts

Michael Smelser  |    |  Tags:  facts twit notes lotus microsoft  |  Comments (3)

I was listening to the the last installment of the TWIT (This Week In Tech) podcast and heard something that just floored me.

The moderator, Leo Laporte, was speaking with a guest named Jason Calacanis who was speaking about what Microsoft does with their applications. What really got me is the statement he made around the 19:52 mark in the podcast:

"Look at what they (Microsoft) did with Lotus 1-2-3. Look at what they (Microsoft) did to Lotus Notes"

Does he really think that Lotus Notes is owned by Microsoft? We should all pray to the binary gods that never becomes reality.

If you want to check it out for yourself, you can download it from iTunes or directly from their website.

1 Don McNally      Permalink Calacanis tends to talk so fast he trips over his tongue. I'm pretty sure he was talking about how they marginalized (or at least tried to) the products. Maybe I'll have to try to listen to it. Calacanis is pretty entertaining a lot of times.

2 jason m calacanis      Permalink Sorry for the confuion. I was talking about how Microsoft competed with Lotus 123 and Lotus Notes.

Obviously bundling of Excel, file formats, etc. all contributed to it beating out 123.

In the case of Notes, as one of the first Lotus Notes programmers in NYC working on one of the largest installs (sony in 1994/95), I wathed first hand as Microsoft claimed they were launching a "notes killer" -- and never did!

3 Michael Smelser      Permalink @jason, Thanks for the clarification. The way I heard it it ust sounded to me like you were stating that Lotus Notes was a Microsoft product. My bad and I apologize for my misstatement.
