It has been a while since my last post. Well some people know which comany i work for and we had a lot of topics that where in focus during the focus during the past weeks :-) Anyways back to normal.past We (my dev dept.) was very active the past month and we where looking into plugins for rcp client. So there we are. ready too distribute........
The rcp launcher seems not to be the best way to do so. We are looking into external tools like client geenie.... But that does also not seem to be a workable solution..... Any experience anyone? We might be willing to outsource it. :D

The IBM Open Mic calls are intended to provide you the opportunity to
interact directly with the IBM Lab developing IBM software products, in
this case the Notes Client team, to have product questions answered. For
details about the Open Mic calls, please see the Lotus Support Open Mic
technical exchange page . If this link is not active, paste this URL into
your browser (http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?&uid=swg27011126).
You can submit your question in advance via the Notes 8 forum using the
Open Mic Invitation for this topic in the "Open Mic" category. We will also
take questions not submitted in advance. Questions should be of general
interest and by their nature help you install, configure, manage or
optimize your environment or processes. Troubleshooting of specific
problems should still be handled by Technical Support, not by Open Mic
calls. For reference, you may wish to review the What's new in release
8.0.1 of Notes Client, Domino Server, and DWA.
(http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21292420). Note: the

I have read a lot of posts on that toppic, everybody seems to be amazed by the improved start up time of the 8.0.1 client.. Hey!!!!! It takes ages. OK it got faster comparing the 8.0.0 client. So i think there is still a lot of potential perfomancegaps to be filled. I think it got todo withe the client architecture. It is pree loading the whole eclipse plattform. If you use the productivitytools (did thea change the name on that?) it takes even longer. Did you ever compare the basic client against the rcp client?? that ist worlds apart. So my conclusion....... IBM is on the right way but miles to go ;-)

Oh wow......... Iphone hype...... hmmmm ok... europe iphone???
I might need to start from the beginning. We in germany have sort of the same problem. An iphone is sold exclusivly with one company which is telcom. They charge arround US$ 600 and an not to cheap contract with it. If you want to have it without it ist a lot more. So where is the point buying one? Just to have it? Ok if someone has a spare and wants to spend it exclusvly to me? send me a ping;-) i wont say no:-)
So that brings me back to the credo of my blogentry..... that hype that you (all you us geeks) have is not even a little hype over here......
People rather depend on blackberrys...... So no hype here....

Today i took a test drive doing the compression as described in help on a simple Testmachine (on my laptop, 2Ghz dual core, 2Gb, Ram, Thinkpad R60)
First it did not look to amazing, as i only have some test databases on that server, nothing realy productiv. On the second look. if you........think on 17% savings on a 1000GB infrastructure that makes it 170GB saving. Si id say that is quite a saving. Not talking about performance improvings.
Next step will be: Running the compact in our QA environment. Which hold an almost exact copy on what we have live. The rate there should be a little more accurate and expressive than my little testing machine.

After all the fuss i thought "lets look for something positive":-) I found something.
It is easy to set up easy to use and very fast to work with.
DominoWebAccess LIGHT DWA8.0.1.
If you simply open up your mailDB in a browser (preferebly firefox or safari, it works on IE as well) an choose the light option.

That goes realy kwick. It throws away all unnessesary heavy weight mail stuff......
Even my wife said " uhhhh that looks need and it is fast" ;-)
She thinks its a little playi the design, but she likes it.

It is fast over a 54Mbit WLAN connection. And as i only do some mailing at home mail is all i want.
So there i can say.. "a job well down" IBM!
What i like most.....
NO POP UPS!
So no problems with browser setting problems. No virus scan problems....
I LOVE IT ;-)
The more you look the more need features you can find.

Look at the sidebar on the "light client" and watch the Sidebar button :-)
Definitiv something id like to see in the rcp client.
OK i defenetly fell in love with dwa light.... uhhhhh aaaaa honney a....i didnt mean toooo...... ouch.... argh..... aua.....

Ok where do we start... The good news is: no critical problem so far. One thing bugs me so..... ever wanted to use the feature to synch your calendar with your sametime availability? Welll i did to..... the only problem was...... it didnt work....... OK... I reinstalled the client --> didnt work i installed a fresh 8.0.1 client --> didnt work upgraded mailDB to 8.0.1 design --> didnt work I installed new XP and new client --> didnt work OK one more I installed Domino 8.0.1 and connected the client to it (was a 7.0.2 CCH1 before) --> didnt work
So i opened up a PMR priority 3 ... wel just a feature that seemed to not work in that particular environment..... Got answer from BIG BLUE...... Problem HZHU7BG7ZB report ist breits dokumentiert The below issue can reproduce on both WCT801_20080201 and WCT801_20080202 build on Windows clients.
It'S a pitty. How can i roll out a piece of software with known bug and a custommer testing it an hour after it was released gets a prepared problem report?

well well well...... Why not communicate..... Hey there is a fine piece of client, but it has some known bugs.... you cant use the all new feature of bla bla.......... Would have saved myself some hours of new installation clients servers and osses....... ok my hourerly rate is notexorbitant so the invested time was only some sent worth of money ;-) and i do think i am not the only one ending up with errors like this..... hmmm where is the accountability?
My boss would have had my fired for doing things like this.... in a photon torpedo outta space.... YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

30 Minutes into testing and we have 3 PMRs to raise. It is unbelieveble, we have downloaded installed and fired up the 8.0.1 client and during installation we got the foirst error that nlswbe.dll could not be installed on one client. The installation ran trough anyway and the client seems to run so far witth no further errors. On a second client, the preview of an email caused an nsd (repetedly) and the the client did quit its service during work with the message "an error has occured see log....."
I thougt we await a quality offensive by big blue..... or is it a layer 9 problem we have here ;-)
live long and without nsd'S ;-)

Space..... the final frontear...... theses are the voyages of the battle ship flower power ;-) We are writing the 20.th of February 2008
The all new communication software Lotus Notes and Domino 8.0.1 is beeing downloaded as we speak......
Lets ssee if we crack the 100 mark of PMRs.
Star Fleet prommised to have 4 out of FIFTY PMRs closed with this release.... THat is not even 10%...
If that would be the qulity here on my battleship..... the admiral would have me fired asap ;-)
So lets send some prayers that the german version is not producing as many problems as the 0 release did. Oh.... i am downloading the english client at the moment... german will not be available for another 2 weeks.... if i can belive what Star fleet prommises.
Live long and prosper.
