Just a quick note to remind myself and others on Sub-Capacity and Micro-partitioning PVU calculation. This information is correct 25/6/09, please let me know if any information is incorrect Pre-req: server tin ware make model, processor model work out the PVU per core on the physical server Sub-capacity in virtialised environment (VMware, Virtual Machine): PVU of each virtual CPU (vCPU) equals PVU of 1 phyical core if PVU for 1 physical core is 50, the 1 vCPU = 50 PVU Sub-capacity in LPAR: PVU based on the number of cores assigned to the LPAR Sub-capacity in DLAR: PVU based on the max number of cores used by the software two DLARs, DLPAR 1 and DLPAR 2 DLPAR 1 assigned 8 cores running WAS DLPAR 2 assigned 2 cores running DB2 At peak, DLPAR 1 grows to 9 cores and DLPAR 2 reduce to 1 core Total number of cores to license for WAS = 9 Total number of cores to license for DB2 = 2 Micro-partioning Capped: License on the PVU of entitled cores (EC), basically the number of cores assigned to the capped micro-partition Core alocation in increments of 0.01 When working PVU, round the total number of assigned cores to next whole unit: 4 capped micro-partionings running WAS, total cores assigned = 5.2 this will round up to 6, and licensed to PVU of 6 cores Micro-partitioning Uncapped / Dynamic: Licensed to the alocated virtual CPU (vCPU)
PVU of each virtual CPU (vCPU) equals PVU of 1 phyical core
if PVU for 1 physical core is 50, the 1 vCPU = 50 PVU Summary:
for a Dedicated LPAR, the highest number of cores allocated to the LPAR for a Capped Partition, the highest amount of Entitled Capacity (EC) for a Uncapped Partitions, the highest amount of VP (Virtual Processor Cores) for a Shared Processor Pool, the lower of the sum of each partition for a product or the processor core capacity of the shared pool Aggregate fractional processor cores, apply shared pool capping rules, and round up at the server level to the next whole processor core (lower of the sum of the virtual cores or the server capacity)

When I get asked a "quick question" I expect the person to speak very fast, thus making it a quick question.
Further more, the opening question should be "Can I have a quick answer",to which I will reply with the shortest answer possible, spoken at a tremendous speed.
A
quick cheat sheet for Lotus Foundations, this last 2 weeks, I have been getting
lots of questions regarding this, so I have put together a cheat sheet.
Please
let me know if anything included is fabrication and lies, I will correct.
Lotus
Foundations comes in 2 parts:
Software
- Lotus Foundations Start server
Hardware
- Lotus Foundations Appliance
Lotus
Foundations Appliance is essentially a IBM SystemX machine, pre-configured with
processor, ram, disk (simple swap), and flash memory.
(The
flash memory gives you failover assurance, so if in the unlikelihood of the
disk failing, you can still boot up the box and connect to network.)
Lotus
Foundations Start server, gives you firewall, antivirus, domain controller,
file server and much more.
It
runs on Linux OS, and its pretty much self configured and self maintained.
Lotus
Foundations Run is a feature of the Foundations Start server, its basically a
VMWare server (license is free from VMWare website).
Having
a VMWare server facilitates the need to deploy additional software and services
of your choice, for example, BES, Domino server for CRM
Lotus
Foundations Branch Office, add-on to Lotus Foundations Start.
It
can be deployed onto a Lotus Foundations Appliance or in a virtual machine
It
be used to extend an existing Lotus Domino domain, so it can act as a spoke in
an enterprise Lotus Domino infrastructure to remote offices.
Lotus
Foundations Reach, add-on to Lotus Foundations Start.
Lotus Foundations
Reach provides unified communications and collaboration capabilities to Lotus
Foundations
This is a Lotus
Sametime server running in on Lotus Foundations.
Provides
instant messaging, voice over ip (VoIP),and presence awareness capabilities
This add-on is not compatible with Lotus Foundations Branch Office.
Other
Lotus Foundations add-ons listed below:
ExtraFax
- add-on feature (additional license required), fax converted to email, no more
fax number association.
BaehrWare
BusinessPro Advance - document management, expense tracking and reporting, holiday
booking tool, time and billing management, contact management
BaehrWare
BusinessPro - sales opportunity management, quote creation, po tracking,
invoice creation, time and billing management, product and service catalog,
record payment management
BaehrWare
DocuPro - as BusinessPro with document management
GroupForce
- Business management tools: expense tracker, document management, purchase
requester, human resources

actually, not really admin, but more of "find out how and get it done"
its quite a change, for me its always been more dev than admin, but now, there is no dev, and all admin
its been good learning and requires a different take on problem solving skills
so, devs, get your hands on some admining. I now know more about VMs, OS, than I would have needed to know working as a dev
this of course, is just my opinion
and whats the point to this blog? probably none... I am still getting used to this blogging lark.

why me? why?
I stoped my TSM v6.1 installation mid way yesterday because I didnt have the SAN ready.
What a mistake. I have uninstalled everything, and tried to reinstall, but it always craps out at the db2 instance
Uninstalling everything and attempt to reinstall results in this error:
com.ibm.ac.coi.api.exception.WrappedException: The ANT ant task failed. BaseDir = F:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\_uninst\plan\install\MachinePlan_localhost AntFile = MachinePlan_localhost.xml
BALLS....
Until the past 8 months or so, I have been a Lotus Domino developer, touching on Websphere Portal and Portlet Factory development.
My prefer method is go in there, get it done, out! and thats worked pretty well for me, because I am usually fixing someone else's code.
but that was my previous life.
I am now a "Technical Consultant - IBM Software", which means I have to know everything from Hardware parts (SystemX, SystemI, CPU, PVU, storage), VMWare (ESX, VMWare Center, etc) and IBM Software.
I can't just hide in my little yellow / purple bubble any longer.
Today I have done two things that are new to me.
First - TSM v6.1 install.
Second - VMWare Center Install with VMWare license server
and also did my usual breaking things.... this time I attempted at tidying up one of our SystemX servers, I uninstalled MSSQL, thinking what could that possibly be used for.
Load and behold, VMWare Center thats what.
BALLS
I have managed to get VMWare Center reinstalled with VMWare License Server, but how much of it will still work? (VMotion? other features that I have never used?)
Time to go on a course, I need to know how to fix what I break. Although it might just be about a career too late, ha
