Today, a client asked how to apply a quick rule he created to the mails already existing in his email box. In outlook or outlook express, it is relatively easy to do in both software.
Reading a comment on this article http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-10878_11-5055094.html, this does not seem to be the case in Lotus Notes.
As found in http://techrepublic.com.com/5208-10878-0.html?forumID=12&threadID=133570&messageID=3129254 This Outlook functionality is not included in Lotus Notes 6. As page
100 of the Dummies Guide states, a rule can't be applied
retrospectively to email already received. Is this functionality available in Lotus Notes 8? If not, is there an open source script somewhere that we can use to for this functionality. I remember a while back (6-7 years ago) that one of the things that bugged an IT Manager concerning Lotus Notes was that it didn't have a message recall function. If this functionality is not available, would this be one of those things that bug a Lotus Notes Power user or former Exchange User?
Here comes another set of licensing scenario questions... If you don't plan to buy a Domino Express Collaboration, you may buy SameTime Standard License ($70/user) and can install a Domino Server for SameTime Server to run. If you only have a Domino Express Collaboration license, you are unable to send files and capture the screen using the icon on the embedded Lotus Notes sametime client. You have to have SameTime Standard to do these and more. You need to install 1 SameTime Standard server; point the embedded Lotus Notes sametime client to the SameTime Standard server and you will have access to the SameTime Standard features. However, you still need to buy SameTime Standard licenses for each of the embedded Lotus Notes sametime client that points to the SameTime Standard server. If you would rather use the separate SameTime client than the embedded Lotus Notes Sametime client. You are able to install the separate SameTime client without requiring additional purchase of a Sametime client license. Am I giving the right answers to the different scenarios?
Thanks Dave.
I have yet another question concerning licensing.
If you have shop floor workers who will be logging in just to record a leave request, could you just place a single client and pay for only a single client license, no matter how many users are involved?
If a client insists of having users use Outlook for POP3 mail connection, does he have to pay for an additional license that is more expensive than using a Lotus notes client?
One of the things I do when I'm debugging an error that occurs only to 1 client is use the client's data. With the permission of the client, I'd back up their database and restore it to a test machine and then go through the steps of recreating the error. This is difficult to do in Lotus or rather I'm having a difficult time doing this if the document is to be clicked via a view. The document is not viewable in the new test machine since I'm using a user with different domain and user credentials. I know this is due to the security built in to Lotus. Is there a technique I should be using to make it easier on myself? [edited] Just read something that might help me ... http://www.wissel.net/blog/d6plinks/SHWL-7P66BZ
Thanks for the explanation, Dan. :)
From what I can gather, it doesn't matter what client you use to connect to Domino Express, you will be paying for each user as per the usual domino express license.
I found a good though slightly outdated (in terms of price) Domino Express Licensing FAQ.

I just came from a prospect and he expressed an idea of
having Domino Express be a POP3 email server for 100+ users. I'm
wondering how the licensing for this works? Does anyone know? If
you use the Domino Express Server as a web server and email server for 100+
users but are not using the Lotus Notes Client, do you still pay for 100+ users
or just the Domino Express Server? Do you pay extra for using
the Domino Express as a web server? My understanding of the Domino Collaboration Express Licensing is that
you pay 1 license; you can set up 1 Domino server and 1 client. Your
Lotus notes client can connect to any Domino Express server(s) in the
domain. You can also connect to Domino as a web user without
additional license. Am I right? Ahh... the complexities of licensing... or am I just confusing myself.
I know that the search feature in Notes is quite good. It is able to search inside pdf, document and worksheet attachments and Notes Database entries However, when I am working in Domino Designer, it feels lacking. This is probably and hopefully due to lack of knowledge. One of the things that frustrates me is the ability to search which notes objects are calling a particular form, view or lotusscript function. Currently I click inside a method, press Ctrl+F to activate the search window. Once in the search window, I make sure that the scope is for all objects and Wrap at start/end is checked. Click on Find Next to start the search process. One of the problems with this approach is that I have to go to each notes form/view/lotusscript library and repeat the process. Another problem is that it does not seem to be working correctly. I mean I enter the word HeadCount in the method of one of the views. After doing my search, it does not find the method containing these key words. However, I know for a fact that the word HeadCount is found in the ViewSelection Method. Why is the search not finding this? Did a google search and found this http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=ac768e36-be57-4306-966c-5089b0c4d50e&displaylang=en It's a windows desktop search add-in for Lotus Notes. It's brief description is Now easily find Lotus Notes items and search their content. Has anyone used this? Is it the answer to my problems? I will be trying this out soon in a XP Virtual Machine. Are there better options?
As easily seen by my blog title, I declare myself to be a Lotus Neophyte, a collaboration and work flow challenged person, a dabbler in web based applications and a fetus in java programming. So I beg your pardon as I ask the most infantile Lotus questions: Infantile Question #1: Why would having the current date (Today's Date) as filter to a notes view cause the view to have refresh issues? What is the best workaround to lessen/avoid the problem? Here is the scenario: We have an application which records the scheduled meetings per salesmen in Notes documents. Our client requested that she has a view that shows only the current date's scheduled meetings per salesman and another view to show the future scheduled meetings per salesman. The view: Salesman Company Company Category Month + Year Date Purpose of meeting Time of Meeting Contact Person Designation Address I have been told that this view will be quite slow as the number of document increases since the view will need to be refreshed all the time. Every click of the user will result in a refresh. Disclaimer: In my recent former life, I coded in Foxpro, SQL.
