Domino 8.5 called, er, says, "You can have your modem back."

One of these things is not like the others...

Can you spot the difference?  I knew that you could.

Yep, X.PC goes the way of the Dodo in Notes/Domino 8.5.

Here's how the Admin help sums it up:
Support for direct dialup modem (X.PC) connections is available only in releases of Domino earlier than release 8.5. You may continue to use Domino Administrator 8.5 to configure and maintain direct dialup modem support, but only on servers running pre-8.5 releases.

So, those of you out there that are still relying on XPC to connect users to servers or servers to servers (yes, I confess I was forced to connect two servers via dialup as a long term (and long distance) solution once myself  *shudder*), you'll need to make a few changes before your 8.5 rollout.

PS.  I almost titled this entry, Beep beep beep beep beep beep beep boop, WeeeeRRRR waaaaaa crrrrrrrrrrr, but my modemese is a little rusty.  ;)

1 David N Schaffer      Permalink Well, retrieving mail at 28.8 kbps is getting a bit unworkable, but it's been nice to have the modem as a back door into the server when the Internet service goes down.
Are they going to finally kill the NetBIOS connections as well?
I once could monitor the modem handshake from the next room just by the tones. Probably a good skill to forget!

2 Devin Olson    Trackback Hey there David.
Welcome to the blogging world.

I have to admit, your blog title name is better than my blog name.

-Devin.

3 David Brown      Permalink @ David : If we are lucky they'll at least make it so that a fresh Domino install doesn't create a NetBios port by default just because it thinks it should.

4 David Brown      Permalink @ Devin : Aw shucks. Thanks for the compliment. That name for a blog or website has been rattling around in my head for quite a while. Since blogging is a new adventure for me, I'll take all the encouragement I can get. :)
