Employee photos in corporate directory

Does your company allow employee photos in their corporate directory?  If so, how do you get it past your human resources department?  My HR department feels it would be too risky.  They think it would open us up to law suit if an internal candidate claimed they did not get a job based on their published photo.

Also, does anyone have any input on how prevalent this practice is?

1 Chris Whisonant      Permalink I've seen this at many companies. At a former employer, I actually wrote an Intranet Directory and imported all of the images from our employee badging server. I think that when you get into talking about potential suits like that, there are many more things that are probably already being done in your environment that also open themselves up to potential suits. I can see the flip side of it, but I'm not sure I've really heard of those types of suits being filed - although this is America and anything could happen! ;)

I've heard some of the privacy complaints that we should be able to prevent right-click, save-as on the image, but to get around having to add that code I just told HR that you can still use the print screen key to get an image from the desktop...

2 Simon O'Doherty      Permalink Hi,

We have this in IBM on our internal directory. It is requested to put a picture up but it is in no way enforced to do so. Many people do use it and not everyone has the business suit, tie, haircut type pictures (they are within business guidelines though).

I think I understand where HR are coming from. I don't know about IBM but I do know from HR friends that they don't accept photos on CV/resumes for that very reason.

Personally I find it very helpful being able to see a picture with the person I talk to.
