IBM - Memory tuning for Domino on VMware ESX

Chris Whisonant - 2008-08-29 08:48:45.781

Question
With VMware ESX, it is possible to assign to an application the amount of memory it needs. A VM running Microsoft® Windows® with a Lotus® Domino® server appears not to be using all the memory assigned. Is it a good practice to further reduce the memory assigned to the VM?

Answer
Domino allocates memory as needed; therefore, memory usage may increase over time, based on load and usage patterns.

The single component of Domino that allocates the most memory is the Unified Buffer Manager (UBM); it is used for caching database information. The Unified Buffer Manager maximum size is set by Domino when it starts to about 40% of available system memory and to, by default, no more than 748 MB on Windows. This means that the size of the UBM for a VM with 1 GB of assigned memory would be smaller than a VM with 2 GB. In both these situations, VMware would report each VM to still have plenty of free memory, even under load, simply because Domino prevents itself from using all memory in case allocations are required by other tasks or component if usage patterns change over time.

Domino, as a 32-bit application, would use at most 2.5 to 3 GB of RAM.
